Sadler’s Wells presents
Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch
+ Terrain Boris Charmatz
Sadler's Wells Theatre - 14th to 22nd, February 2024
The stage blooms with 8000 silk carnations in a playground for 20 exceptional dancers
A signature work by Pina Bausch, Nelken (Carnations) is a pinnacle in Tanztheater Wuppertal’s repertoire. Amplified by a new generation of performers, this bouquet of dance is an ode to the beauty of dancing bodies.
In the history of dance, few creations bear the stamp of genius. Nelken, premiered in 1982, is one of them. In a huge field of 8000 carnations, the ensemble deploys the seasons, moves from chair to chair, displays its virtuosity with a nod to classical forms.
The work conveys a world view that is tragic and cruel, but also tender and overflowing with a humanity that has touched audiences all over the world. Certain passages, such as the “Nelken Line,” have become iconic. Beauty blossoms here at every moment.
São Paulo Dance Company
Sadler's Wells Theatre - 9th to 10th, February 2024
Gnawa - Iari - Davies
Brazil’s finest dance company fuse the elegance of classical ballet with the sensuality of Latin American dance.
Making their UK debut, this ‘sleek, sexy and highly technical’ (The New Yorker) company of talented dancers are set to impress.
Goyo Montero(resident choreographer with Carlos Acosta’s company Acosta Danza) explores the idea of collective identities in Anthem, an epic and emotionally charged ensemble piece for 14 dancers, beautifully visualised with dramatic lighting.
Gnawa, by Nacho Duato, draws on the Mediterranean colours and flavours of Valencia, powered by the hypnotic, ritualistic music of North Africa.
For the finale, Brazilian choreographer Cassi Abranches’ colourful and flirtatious Agora sculpts the movement of each dancer’s body with the percussive beats and bass grooves of Afro-Brazilian fusion.
